Kaj pravi nevroznanost?
Študije na področju nevroznanosti so ugotovile, da so v nevrobiologijo FNM vpleteni naslednji procesi:

(Teorija na podlagi katere možgani napovedujejo in procesirajo senzorične informacije, glede na pretekle izkušnje; Edwards idr., 2012)
Pri pacientih s FNM so prav tako ugotovili strukturne in funkcionalne spremembe v možganskem predelu, ki je odgovoren za obdelavo motoričnih informacij in predelu, katerega naloga je dualno procesiranje motoričnih in emocionalnih informacij (Aybek idr., 2014; Baizabal-Carvallo idr., 2019)
Študije so prav tako ugotovile nenormalno funkcionalno povezljivost področij, ki se povezujejo s kognitivnim nadzorom, inhibicijo vedenja in zaznavnim zavedanjem. Prav tako študije kažejo nenormalno možgansko aktivnost v možganskem predelu, ki uravnava senzorično integracijo (Perez idr., 2015).
Aybek idr., (2014) so poročali o povezavi med povečano sivino v suplementarnem motoričnem področju in trajanju FNM ter povezavo med povečano sivino v levem premotoričnem korteksu in resnostjo funkcionalnih nevroloških simptomov.
Poudariti je pomembno, da so to rezultati prečnih študij, zaradi česar ne vemo zagotovo, ali so te spremembe vzrok ali posledica funkcionalnih nevroloških simptomov.
